Hot summer
Few doubted that the summer recess would pass without a major economic or political crisis. After all, the UK is at war, the Sovereign debt crisis worldwide is in turmoil thanks to the Tea-Party Republicans in the American Congress and the Euro area is in turmoil. This week global stock markets lost £1.5 trillion off shares in 24 hours when a credit agency downgraded America’s tripleA credit rating. All the above, whilst devastating and worrying, was predictable as a possible scenario over the summer. The crisis in the Euro single currency should have been enough for the Prime Minister to stagger Ministerial holidays to give confidence to the markets and the country with senior Cabinet members available for any eventuality.
Domestically we have witnessed with bewilderment the riots in Tottenham and across London. The absence of the Home Secretary and the Tory Mayor of London whilst London is burning and rioting is inexplicable and crass. The PM is responsible wherever he is but he is not in charge when he has to delegate policy responsibilities to people in his absence from Downing Street. Having most of his senior ministers away holidaying at the same time was reckless and very poor judgement.
