Lib/Dems Conference

Lib/Dems Conference

The political choreography of David Cameron and Nick Clegg as they prepared for their Party conferences last week made Celebrity Come Dancing look amateurish. Nick Clegg began in Birmingham telling his assembled faithful that the Tories are still nasty and that only he stops them from being nastier, whilst David Cameron getting ready for two weeks hence did a Batman and Robin visit to Libya with French President Sarkozy. Back at the Lib/Dem gathering Danny Alexander, the only Lib/Dem more unpopular than his leader tried to get in on the act by announcing that he will soak the rich, reminding us of the saying “the band played believe it if you like.”

The Lib/Dem President tried to cheer his delegates up telling them that the coalition marriage with David Cameron’s nasty Tories was holding but divorce is inevitable, saying “it will not last forever”. However, there was worse to come when Nick Clegg announced that the rumours he would not lead them into the next General election were not true. I suspect that the 700 Lib/Dem councillors who lost last May and the 1000+ set to lose next May were not overwhelmed with their leader’s assurance.
