Libya
Parliament had the first of its two week mid-recess recall last week before adjourning for another three weeks for Party Conferences. The Prime Minister began the week with a statement to the House on Libya. The elusive Colonel Gaddafi is said to be preparing an Alamo last stand in his two remaining strongholds of Sirte and Bani-Walid. It is strange that after six months of NATO bombardments he is still able to unleash barrages of rockets in a counter attack against advancing forces of the National Transitional Council (NTC) forces. The endgame of the regime change is all but accomplished by NATO backed NTC but the question still to be answered is what comes after Gadaffi?
NHS Bill
The National Health and Social Care Bill (England and Wales) finally made it on to the floor of the Commons for its Report stage and Third reading last Tuesday and Wednesday. I had chaired 16 sessions of the Bill Standing Committee, which included over 1000 Government amendments. The Bill now goes to the House of Lords where many more amendments are anticipated before the coalition’s Health Bill becomes law.
