Monday was the 48th day of the summer recess and I began it with a visit the Carstairs State Hospital. Having visited Carstairs over the last 22 years and seen the enormous changes in the buildings, security systems and mental health care facilities, I am pleased that it was my Private Members Bill that made Carstairs State Hospital Scotland’s single Health Board providing Mental Health care for all of Scotland and Northern Ireland.
I took along with me a young Lanark born lawyer Andrew Hilland who worked briefly in my Westminster office during the summer and who is going to Texas this week for two months voluntary work in their Prisons working on Death Row.
All too often some uninformed scribes/pundits depict public servants unfairly, when their only ambition is to make life better and safer for the rest of us. The mental health professionals I met at Carstairs State Hospital last Monday do just that and we all should be grateful for the protection their dedicated service give all of us.
Street surgeries
I did Street/Roving surgeries last week in Bothwell, Uddingston and Carluke. I have done ten street surgeries so far this recess and they are by far the most enjoyable work I have been doing. Meeting people in their own home to discuss the issues that concerns them in their local community brings a quality to my conversation with my constituents. Another good week with quality meetings and visits.
