Absent
I was not able to be in the Manchester Conference Hall for the new Labour Leader’s speech, having previously committed to be with the NATO Science and Technology Committee in a visit to Defence establishments in France. What I missed from not being present for the new Leader’s first speech was superbly compensated for by having it relayed to me in the comfort of a French TGV 200/mph fast train carriage on route from Paris to Toulon.
Frank
The speech was well received both in the hall and the country. His frankness in defining the General Election defeat, in terms that drew a line under the Blair/Brown era was a necessary prerequisite to the new generation of Labour he intends to lead back into government.
Parliament returns next week where Ed Miliband will have his new team of Shadow Ministers thirsting to take on the ConDem coalition. Since the election, aided by a sycophantic media and the drooling support of the Lib/Dems, David Cameron has enjoyed the comfort of a political honeymoon. That ends next week when the new kid on the block invades his comfort zone.
