Big wheeze
The ConDem Government is finally shedding its veneer of pretence of what they mean by the “big society”. The spin and catchphrases have run out and we can finally see the real Tory Government in action. The metamorphose of the Lib/Dems into a rightwing compliant rump, is now complete. For six months the country has been told “we are all in it together”. Now we see the Cameron/Clegg big idea for the big society is for the unemployed to be dragooned into community work presently being done by offenders on community service orders. Surely Welfare Reform is about getting people back into work and rescuing them from institutionalised poverty; not treating them like criminals.
Red Card
The first by-election of this parliament will soon be off and running in Oldham East and Saddleworth. Two High Court judges set aside the General Election result and disqualified the sitting MP, Phil Woolas for the offence of distributing inappropriate election materials in which they considered allegations against his Lib/Dem opponent were untrue and that Woolas knew them to be untrue. The former immigration Minister is well known for his love of football. The irony contained in the judgement for the former Minister is that he was given the “red card” for going over the top and playing the man and not the ball.
