Copenhagen / Merry Christmas

Copenhagen

Copenhagen was always going to be disappointing. It was to be about the degree of disappointment. The fight against climate change is too important to be left to political negotiators around a table. That is why I applauded the many thousands of people around the world who got involved in fighting for the future of the planet. The success of campaigning brought Presidents and Prime Ministers from all over the world to Copenhagen.

The UK government from the off were pushing for a global binding agreement; legally binding agreement yes but we had to have a global consensus and acceptance of global carbon targets as a backstop to stop the growth in global warming. The degree of success was identified with the walk-in of China and President Obama’s America, instead of the walk out of the world’s two largest polluters.

Recognising the danger of the talks collapsing phone calls between UK and US; France; Germany resulted in Obama jetting into Copenhagen for collective and bi-lateral talks with Brown, Sarkosy. Merkle and the other main players including China, Brazil, India, and South Africa; without whose agreement any deal would have been impossible.

Merry Christmas

At this special time my thoughts are with our Armed Forces who put their lives in harms way every day to keep us safe; our public and emergency servants who daily and hourly devote their lives to our well-being and particularly to families who are apart or suffered  bereavement. A Merry Christmas to all.
