Egypt / Oppression

Egypt

The West’s flawed foreign policy of preaching to some on Human Rights whilst ignoring oppression by Middle East despots like Mubarak has got to end. President Mubarak is America’s second closest ally in the Middle East, second only to Israel. The revolution being fought on the streets of Cairo poses a great threat to the American administration as well as having huge consequences to the region and the world economy. It is not just Egypt’s 5% of world oil reserves or control of the Suez Canal that is worrying America, as serious as that is. It is the potential for a domino effect on other close allies, e.g., Saudi Arabia, Jordon, Bahrain, Yemen and Kuwait that poses a greater threat.

Oppression

When people go onto the street risking their lives to oppose oppression we must always be on the side of the oppressed. Shamefully the tanks, guns, riot gear etc used by the Mubarak regime to oppress his people have been supplied by the West. That must end but sadly I see little evidence of change and I fear a civil war in Egypt unless America tells him to go. It seems as with Blair and Bush, Cameron has assumed the role of nodding donkey to Obama. They said it would be different?
