Election Result
Scottish politics across the wide political spectrum will need time to come to terms with the seismic shift in the political divide of Scotland resulting from the SNP’s victory last week. There is no denying that the Scottish Labour Party got a drubbing last week and it would be churlish not to recognise that the SNP campaign and strategy outflanked Labour with the consequence of major losses of Labour seats across Scotland. I congratulate the new MSP for Clydesdale and I have written to Aileen Campbell giving her my assurance that when she works for the best interests of the people of Clydesdale, she will have my support.
Karen Gillon
Karen Gillon was an outstanding MSP for Clydesdale for 12 years. The first woman elected to the Scottish Parliament in 1999; always the campaigner, never shirking the challenge when asked to stand up for her constituents. She has her place in history and deservedly so. I am sure she will return to frontline politics soon.
AV Referendum
The rout of Nick Clegg’s Lib/Dems last week and the huge rejection of the AV referendum that was part of his Coalition deal with Cameron’s Tories should serve as a reminder to the new SNP government that pledges made in election campaigns and not kept when in Government will be judged fiercely by an unforgiving electorate. Nick Clegg’s journey from hero to zero in 12 months is a singular lesson to all political leaders.
