Haiti / Emergency Appeal

Haiti

The world has been deeply moved by this week’s shattering images of the destruction of the Caribbean island of Haiti. The most beautiful island of the Caribbean was ripped apart and destroyed by an earthquake. The global reaction was one of horror as the carnage of the earthquake unfolded with 200,000 lives lost; buildings demolished; survivors clawing through the rubble looking for their loved ones. Children frightened and orphaned, lost in a mêlée of fear and isolation.

The UK Government responded immediately giving £6million and dispatched UK emergency services; firemen, doctors and nurses to the disaster stricken island within 24 hours. President Obama responded ordering a swift coordinated and aggressive US effort. He announced he was mobilizing every element of America’s national capacity of the resources of development agencies, backed with 10,000 armed forces to assist the Haiti Government along with the United Nations to coordinate with other international partners in this extraordinary effort.

 Emergency Appeal

The response to the Haiti Disaster Appeal has been magnificent. The UK contributed £15M to the DEC Haiti earthquake Appeal by the weekend. For every £100 contributed to the Appeal the government gives £28 through tax gift aid. Tick the “gift aid box” with your contribution online, and an additional 28% goes to the disaster appeal from the Treasury. To make a contribution call DEC Haiti Earthquake Appeal on 0370-6060900 or online www.dec.org.uk
