Libya / Desert Deal

Libya

The furore and backlash from the Scottish Government’s decision to release the Lockerbie bomber al-Megrahi has a bit further to run after the voluminous amounts of letters and minutes of meetings between the Scottish government and Arab States have been put into the public domain.

Whilst the Tory supporting tabloids are relentless in trying to tie the Prime Minister and Westminster into Kenny MacAskill’s decision to release al-Megrahi, the questions now for the Scottish government to answer are; Was a sordid deal between the Scottish Government and Libya for al-Megrahi’s release agreed between Salmond and other Arab States acting as agents for Gaddafi? This paper trail puts Salmond, not MacAskill at the heart of the decision to release the Lockerbie bomber.

Desert Deal

The deal in the desert between Tony Blair and Gaddafi in 2005 was accepted by all political parties, including the SNP in Westminster. The agreement eased economic sanctions on Libya in return for Gaddafi dropping its pursuit for nuclear weapons and supporting the West’s fight against terrorism. The much reported Prisoner Release Agreement (PRA) first had a UK proposal to exclude al-Megrahi from the PRA. Libya wouldn’t agree but accepted that if al-Megrahi did apply for PRA that any consideration and/or decision would fall within the remit of the Scottish Legal system and therefore a matter for the Scottish Government and that the UK Government would not in any way intervene, seek to influence or have the power to do so.
