Owenstown the “field of dreams”
“Build it and they will come”, the theme from the fictional Hollywood blockbuster the “Field of Dreams” and it could happen in South Lanarkshire. The news last week of a planned new town, “Owenstown” to be built in a 2000 acre site near the former mining village of Rigside was awesome and inspiring.
200 years after Robert Owens’s dream and virtuous ambition for New Lanark was born, this new town in the Douglas Valley named after him, would be the 21st century’s equivalent to what inspired Robert Owen two centuries ago.
A town double the population of Lanark creating 800 jobs; eco-friendly and environmentally sustainable is what dreams are made of. I wish Jim Arnold and the Hometown Foundation well as they bring their dreams to fruition. Rigside is no longer in my constituency but New Lanark is, I therefore have more than a nostalgic interest in this fantastic project. The economic development, employment and the widespread community benefits that will flow from it across Lanarkshire gives us all part of that dream to share.
Open Days
I would like to thank those voluntary groups/organisations who responded to my invitation to attend Open Days throughout Lanark & Hamilton East to meet and discuss issues of common concerns confronting their groups. The response has been tremendous and I will be writing to each and every group/organisation to arrange dates, venues and times of meetings.
