The Scottish Justice Minister Kenny MacAskill would have us believe he hasn’t made a decision to release the Lockerbie bomber yet. That he hasn’t had time to read or discuss the Prison Governor’s report recommending Megrahi’s release and that withdrawing his appeal against conviction was a coincidence and nothing to do with him. If not a coincidence it certainly was convenient for the Scottish Judiciary, CIA and MI6.
The Minister’s handling of the case is daily, if not by the hour bordering on the ridiculous. It is farcical to suggest that after weeks of discussing Megrahi’s release he is not ready to publish his decision. The Holyrood cat knows Megrahi is exiting Greenock and Libyan bound.
The SNP government is seriously compromised by the belief that Megrahi withdrawing his appeal was their pre-condition of supporting the deal with Gaddafi’s Libyan regime, brokered by the UK and US governments. Hilary Clinton’s intervention last week was all about choreography and should be treated as such and was made to assist her domestically and MacAskill in Scotland.
Releasing Megrahi into the hands of Colonel Gaddafi is being spun as MacAskill’s preferred option. You do not need to be a conspiracy theorist to balk at this charade. The SNP mocked Tony Blair when he met Colonel Gaddafi in the desert and brokered a deal to release Megrahi. That same deal is what is on Kenny MacAskill’s desk now. The spin has changed but the deal hasn’t.
