Shameful / Prisoners Vote

Shameful

Last week the plight of the Egyptian people’s protest against their Government on the streets of Cairo was on a knife edge. Many had been killed by Mubarak’s Security Forces and many more seriously injured. Alas, whilst they were dying in the streets believing they were supported by the American led West they were shamefully abandoned in true “Grand old Duke of York” form by Obama and Cameron who marched them up to the top of the hill supporting “Mubarak must go now” only to march them back down again with their “Mubarak must stay” only three days later.

Prisoners vote

There will be a vote in Parliament this week on UK prisoners voting rights. The debate arises from the European Court of Human Rights ruling that the UK by denying prisoners a vote are in breach of the Human Rights Convention. This promises to be a challenging debate for both sides of the House from which there will be some synthetic vitriol and populist chatter. The Con/Dem Coalition is allowing their back benchers a free vote but their payroll vote, i.e. Ministers, etc. will be whipped to support the Convention’s ruling. I expect it will end with a Conservative Coalition motion to accept the Court’s ruling being passed, but with considerable unease of both sides of the House.
