Three Lions
England losing the FIFA auction last week to host the 2018 World Cup caused quite a stir in the high echelons of the football world. “England was cheated and betrayed by the crooked FIFA Mafia” – was the English FA response. The Bid Team was fronted by the ‘Three Lions’, (Prince William and the two David’s, Beckham and Cameron). Losing was bad enough but losing to Russia rubbed salt into English raw wounds.
Prince William looked enthused but naive, Beckham’s passion for his country cannot be questioned but he looked out of his depth and you would have thought David Cameron would have smelt a rat when his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin said he wouldn’t jeopardise Russia’s bid by turning up in Zurich before the vote. The Prime Minister was not going to be put off and thought his “Conservative Conference stage walk about routine” would impress FIFA and win it for England. As they say, the rest is history.
The Acting Chief Executive of the FA immediately announced his resignation from FIFA saying he could not work with people who promised support only days before then reneged on their promise. That opinion will be shared by university students who feel Nick Clegg’s Lib/Dems are betraying them, after pledging to vote against increases in student fees at the general election, Lib/Dems now want to treble them.
