Weekend away
In the run-in of the ConDem Coalition’s spending review to be announced this week I decided that this weekend was the right time to keep a promise made to my grand-kids in the summer to take them to Blackpool illuminations. It was a trip down memory lane for me but also great fun for my 10 and 16 year old grandchildren.
It was also a weekend of “the calm before the storm”. The ConDems had been spinning that there was no alternative to their 25-40% cuts in public spending and that they were determined to go ahead regardless of the protestations from whatever source, including their own backbenches.
Big Society
Let no one be fooled by the Tories “Big Society” confidence trick. This is the Con in the ConDem coalition. Their big society is about “man mind thyself”. When they say, “give more power to the communities”, they mean let the communities provide for themselves. Charities and the Voluntary sector are seen as the replacement for public service bodies. David Cameron dropped his insistence of abolishing Inheritance Tax during the election. I believe he will cut Inheritance Tax if he stays in power until 2015. Remember, you read it first in the WC.
